I-74 Bridge Celebration

CELEBRATION & BRIDGE VIEWING

WE MADE IT!

New bridge opens following epic celebration

History was made on December 1, 2021 in the Quad Cities! People came from near and far on a beautiful day to take their first steps on the new, iconic I-74 Mississippi River Bridge and celebrate the future of our states, communities, and region. The public celebration followed a Ribbon Cutting ceremony featuring more than 400 federal, state, and community leaders and remarks from the Governors of Iowa and Illinois. It was an epic celebration that will not soon be forgotten.

Then on December 2, 2021, the new I-74 River Bridge opened to traffic, connecting Iowa and Illinois with an iconic structure welcoming residents, visitors, and new opportunities to the Quad Cities. Handcrafted with the help of Quad Cities labor and businesses, the new structure will serve generations to come.

This project and celebration embodies the character and hope of the Quad Cities, and it only gets better from here!

What’s Next?

There’s more to come including the new bike and pedestrian path on the Illinois-bound bridge, which will make it even easier to explore the Quad Cities!

Beginning in 2022, work will include removal of the old suspension bridge as well as landscaping with pedestrian-friendly features that will beautify the riverfront and land along the improved interstate system.

Regional Strategy

The I-74 River Bridge project is part of a regional strategy to improve access across the Mississippi River. It includes the replacement of the I-74 twin bridges over the Mississippi River and reconstruction of the interstate to provide a safer, more reliable traveling experience with additional lanes and improved interchanges.
