The project consists of reconstructing 5.5 miles of I-74, including new river bridges over the Mississippi River to replace the old suspension bridges.
I-74 between Middle Road in Bettendorf, Iowa and south of Avenue of the Cities in Moline, Illinois.
Construction began in July 2017. The Iowa-bound bridge opened in November 2020, and the Illinois-bound bridge in December 2021. Additional work, including landscaping and demolition of the old bridge is anticipated to begin in 2022.
The project is estimated at approximately $1 billion, which includes engineering, design, and construction.
The I-74 bridge traffic is overcapacity, leading to long delays and frequent need for repairs. A new bridge is needed to accommodate current and future traffic volumes.
